On October 21 and 22, 2017, the HSC will organize the championship of the champions for the first time on its own. For the 37th edition of the event at the Hamburg Outer Alster, which has always been a sporty and sociable high point in the regatta calendar for the active, the call for tenders has recently started.
All reigning German champions, last year's Olympians, youth champions and German sailors who have won an international championship or other top-class titles are eligible to compete under the patronage of the German Sailing Association. Other prominent sailors can also be invited using wildcards.
The boats that are identical to those of the Bundesliga J / 70 class are sailed in the "Umpired Fleet Races" mode. This ensures that all teams still have a chance of reaching the finals on the second day of sailing. According to the Hamburg sailing club, the initial response has been good. The adaptation of the Bundesliga format is particularly popular with the champions.
The organization team around race director TinBuch, who has already successfully led the championship several times, is formed. A fleet of escort boats for crew changes, security and referees has been set up. The experienced match race referee Hannes Diefenbach was won as chief umpire. On Saturday evening there will be a sailing party in the rooms of the HSC, restaurateur Kai Steinhagen and his team take care of the catering for the guests.
Taking on the regatta is of particular importance to the club. It is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. And it was an HSC team - Thomas Dmoch and Andreas Etten - that won the opening event in 1980, which at that time was still sailed on pirates on the Steinhuder Meer. The continuation of the traditional event, which there is no second time in this form, fits perfectly.
