Since yesterday, a three-and-a-half-kilometer locking net has been laid on the Baltic Sea off Heiligendamm. It is located 500 meters off the coast and is intended to prevent ships from approaching the meeting place of the G8 summit participants.

The “Technical Lock Lake” begins at the G8 conference hotel, the Kempinski Grand Hotel in Heiligendamm. It will be built as a continuation of the twelve kilometer long fence on land around Heiligendamm. The meeting of heads of state and government lasts from June 6th to 8th.

In total, due to the summit, two restricted areas will be installed at sea, which are marked by yellow-red buoys and in which civil shipping of any kind is prohibited: An outer restricted area extends up to seven and a half nautical miles to the Baltic Sea and is in force from June 3 to 9. An inner restricted area directly in front of the conference hotel is approximately 3.7 kilometers long and 5.5 kilometers wide. Ships are no longer allowed to operate there since May 14th. It will initially last until June 3rd. After that, it will be set up again from June 9th to 12th

A map of the two restricted areas can be found at www.polizei.mvnet.de, the exact coordinates at the BSH at www.elwis.de (section: “Announcements for Seafarers”).
