The finest sails at the classic Copdel Rey off Mallorca
Overall victory at the 36th edition of the traditional Spanish regattCopdel Rey this year secured the Spanish team on "Rats on Fire", which triumphed in the ORC-1 classification. Spain's King Felipe VI. had not missed the participation, but with the "Aifos" crew and the weaker individual ranks 11 and 15 on the day of the final fell back to fifth. However, the monarch did not let this spoil his good mood at the award ceremony. He had previously strolled through Sóller with his family, where he had visited an exhibition about the friendship between Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso.
Sailed in the Maxi-72 class behind Dieter Schön's "Momo" in second place: the Italian "Cannonball"
In the Maxi 72 class, Dieter Schön's crew sailed on "Momo" with tactician Markus Wieser ahead of Mallorca's victory, relegating the four competitors "Cannonball" (Italy), "Proteus" (USA) and "BellMente" to the following places. A total of 138 yachts from 24 countries took part - a new record! The competition was in Mediterranean picture book weather in the classes IRC, ORC, J 80 and other categories. In addition, the professional series GC32 Racing Tour served fans and beach tourists on site with spectacular catamaran races, in which the Japanese "MammAiuto!" by Naofumi Kamei was able to prevail in front of the American team Argo and the Swiss real team with Jerôme Clerc. With this third place on the podium, the Swiss defended their overall lead in the Tour ranking. Flavio Marazzi's Armin Strom Sailing Team with helmsman Erik Heil - 49er bronze medal winner at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro - had to be satisfied with ninth place ahead of Palm. The newly formed team with many young Olympic starters showed its potential with results such as a second and two fourth places, but is not yet sailing consistently enough.
Spain's King Felipe congratulates the "Earlybirds" on their victory
The extremely exciting series of Swan 45 yachts won Christian Plump's "ElenNova" in the heartbeat final. With the fourth win of the day, the crew under the stand of the North German Regatt Club prevailed after eleven races with one point ahead of Francisco Rizzo's "Negra". That was not a matter of course, because the way to victory seemed long for the Germans after a few weaker results. But owner and helmsman Plump, tactician Sten Mohr and the crew were able to focus again in the final sprint and regain the lead including class victory. The American team of the "K-Force" sailed in third place. In the Club Swan 50 class, on the other hand, Hendrik Brandis' "Early Bird" with Jochen Schümann won confidently with 13 points ahead of Leonardo Ferragamos "Cuordileone" and AndreMasis "Ulika".
