The new youth championship class 29er
German youth championships are to be held on the Skiffjolle 29er and the surfboard BIC Techno 293 OD in the next four years. The longboard Mistral One Design loses its youth championship status from 2006. That was decided by around 300 delegates from associations of the German Sailing Association at the 16th Youth Sailing Meeting in Halle (Saale).
In addition, the participants at the meeting, which is held every two years, confirmed the previous championship boats for teenagers and youngsters, i.e. Opti, Teeny, Europe, Laser Radial, 420er, Pirat, and Hobie 16.
The decision in surfing was particularly urgent. In November 2004, the International Sailing Association (ISAF) chose the Neil Pryde RS-X as the new Olympic board to replace the no longer produced Mistral One design. This also meant that a suitable youth board was needed on which the youngsters can optimally prepare for the so-called hybrid board RS-X. Although the long-term, global development of surfing at the youth sailors' meeting was not yet in sight, the BIC Techno 293 OD was chosen for the years 2006 to 2009 - but with the reservation that the status should be checked after two years and, if necessary, in line with international developments To change in 2008 and 2009.
The decision in favor of the Skiffjolle 29er was also exciting. Four years ago, the class tried to get youth championship status. At that time still in vain, the delegates now decided with 398 to 216 votes, recommending the sailing council and the DSV presidium to introduce the new championship category "skiff class" in accordance with the statutes. Otherwise the 29er would have had to compete in a runoff election against the established two-hand boats 420 and Pirat. The choice of the 29er in this new category then went with only 33 votes against for the sporty two-man boat.
