17th Hanse Sail in Rostock

After a promising start, thick fog and heavy rain showers at times clouded the mood of the captains and visitors to the 17th traditional sailing meeting in Rostock. Nevertheless, the organizers draw a positive balance. And the planning for the 18th Hanse Sail next year is already in full swing.

With more international tall ships than ever before, this year's Hanse Sail offered a unique international flair. The Polish sailing training ship "Dar Mlodziezy" and the "Concordia" from Canada celebrated their Hanse Sail premiere, and the Mexican "Cuauhtemoc" was one of many exotic guests

Hanse Sail boss Holger Bellgardt also underlines a special logistical challenge under difficult conditions. “With ships from 14 countries and numerous international guests, the 17th Hanse Sail Rostock has gained in charisma. We want to build on this in 2008. We will carefully cultivate the contacts we have made, he promises.

Only the weather partially clouded the mood on the water and on land. Dense fog and too weak winds made it impossible to hold the 14th edition of the traditional sailing regatt in front of Warnemünde and impaired the view from land.

Despite the bad weather, more than 750,000 visitors enjoyed the sight of the ships, some of which are over 100 years old. A total of 30,000 guests took advantage of the opportunity to sail on the windjammers. The navy also draws a positive balance: 30,000 people visited ships, boats and facilities in Rostock and the surrounding area.

There is no long break for the organizers after the Sail: The first traditional sailing ships have already confirmed for the 18th edition from August 7th to 10th, 2008. For example, the Swedish brig "Trekroner" or the replica of the East Indiaman "Götheborg" are being courted.

Hanse Sail boss Holger Bellgardt is pleased that the small town of Gävle in the north of Sweden has joined the Baltic Sail association. The partner country of the Hanse Sail Rostock in the coming year will be Latvia, which will then hold the chairmanship of the Baltic Sea Council.
