Two highlights of the Kiel Week 2017 already took place on the first weekend of the world's largest sailing festival: the races of the 12 mR classics and the revival of the traditional eel regatta.

The classic rendezvous

Historical sailing beauties dominated the scene on the Kiel inner fjord at the regattas of the twelve and 5.5 on Sunday and Monday. The races of the Kieler Woche Trophy were about more than just the Kieler Woche victory for the nine competing twelve: The races are part of the World Series, in which boats in Europe and America will fight for points over the next two years. The next stops in the World Series are for the European boats in Flensburg and Aarhus. The final will follow in July 2019 in Newport, home of the America's Cup. Between 1958 and 1987, the more than 100 year old boat class of the twelve determined the duels of the Cup.

The oldest boat at the Kieler Woche Trophy was the twelve "Heti", while the twelve "Anita" competed with a new rig. The youngest boat in the field, the "Kiwi Magic", built in the 1980s, had the bow in the end and won ahead of "Anitra" and "Heti". The "Singora" emerged as the winner of the 5.5 races. "Traumfänger" and "Diva" take second and third place, followed by "Meltemi" and "Nowa".

Eel to kick off

For the first time in ten years, the Welcome Race and the eel regatta, both from Kiel to Eckernförde and back, were organized together to kick off the sea sailors off Kiel. In ten groups, including four ORC classes, around 200 yachts were sent on the course to Eckernförde, and after a good three and a half hours, Jens Burmeister's "Ember Sea" (Warnemünde), the fastest yacht had covered the 35 nautical mile course. After the calculated time over all classes, the "Tutima" showed the best performance.

On the second day the wind subsided, but the spi courses made up for the long cross-cuts on Saturday. Kirsten Harmstorf's tutima crew was also the fastest ship calculated on the return regatta in ORC I. From Eckernförde to Kiel, she sailed the entire field to the finish line. The victory in ORC III went to an experienced men's team. With the "Immac Fram", Kai Mares relegated the competition in the ORC class with the greatest performance density to the places. The victories in the two other ORC divisions went to the "Sydbank" from Torsten Bastiansen (Flensburg, ORC II) and the "Wirbelzopf" from Malte Scharffenberg (Kiel, ORC IV).
