The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Water Police Department announced that a scuba diver discovered an aerial bomb in front of the Sassnitz city harbor on September 13th, which had to be blown up on site. Therefore, the city port of Sassnitz will be closed on October 2nd.
Specialists from the ammunition recovery service of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania carried out a first dive on September 18 based on the information. No explosive device could be detected as a result of this dive. Therefore, a new date for diving the site was set for September 24th, this time with the assistance of the recreational diver who provided the information. During the second dive, the bomb from the Second World War was found and its location marked accordingly.
It is not possible to defuse it on site, the bomb located in a water depth of 8 m and approx. 200 m from the shore should be blown up. The demolition takes place on October 2nd, 2007 in the period from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. To this end, the city port of Sassnitz and the beach promenade from the city port to the pier will be closed.
