The 55th “Rund um” has a new old winner: Joschi Entner safely won the Blue Ribbon from Lake Constance after 7 hours and 47 minutes of sailing. The Austrian, who sails for the Fraueninsel (Chiemsee) water sports club, won for the seventh time with his Liber "Principessa".
The "Rund um" began with a long period of lull last Friday evening at 7.30 pm. The field of 450 boats barely moved for hours. A thunderstorm front came a little earlier than announced by the weather report. Weather lights and lightning over the western part of the lake showed the sailors that it was time for precautionary measures.
Shortly afterwards, the first gusts swept across the lake with up to 7 Beaufort. Two boats overturned, sails torn, masts and oars broke on others, and one yacht sank. The crews were rescued by the numerous belay boats that accompanied the regatta. One person was transferred to medical care with hypothermia.
The police counted a total of 14 sea emergencies during the night. By morning around 130 boats with the status "abandoned" reported to the regatta management. 283 ships have reached the destination.
One of the victims of the storm was the Rommel 33 “Z-Up” during the night. In the hustle and bustle of the thunderstorm, Ferdinand Kaiser rammed the yacht. A large hole on the starboard side was the result. However, the crew managed to reach the next port without major water ingress.
At 3:17 am the shot rang off and the “Principessa” was on target. The second yacht did not arrive until 4:57 am, the “Rubin XIV” with skipper Joachim Grauer from YCL. Third was the “Magic Lady” with skipper Wolfgang Palm, also from the YCL.
