Wilfried Erdmann and his future wife Astrid in 1968 on board his first "Kathena"
On Thursday evening at 6.15 p.m., the NDR will show a 30-minute documentary about the German record circumnavigator Wilfried Erdmann. A film team accompanied the 76-year-old and his wife Astrid as they prepared for their first voyage on the "Kathennui" after a long time. The four-time circumnavigator had sailed around the world twice on the 10.60 meter long aluminum yacht - once against the prevailing wind direction. Afterwards, the ship had stood ashore for almost 14 years before the passionate solo sailor brought her out of her deep sleep last year in order to set out on another longer voyage (interview in YACHT 10/2016, boat portrait in YACHT 12/2016).
This trip, for which the Erdmanns set out in May, took the couple north to Scotland. In the meantime, "Kathennui", Astrid and Wilfried Erdmann have arrived on the Faroe Islands, where they celebrated a very personal anniversary yesterday: 50 years ago the couple met in the port of Gibraltar - Erdmann was just on his way, the first German one-handed To become a circumnavigator.
In the documentary entitled "NDR Typisch! Once a sailor, always a sailor: Wilfried Erdmann", the Erdmanns look back on their trips together and not together, on the motivation, doubts and fears associated with them. Cinematic reviews of their travels complement the documentary.
