The trimaran "IDEC"
It undercut the mark, which has been valid since 1994, by three nautical miles. Joyon sailed his 27-meter-long trimaran "IDEC" at an average of 22.62 knots (41.90 km / h). The record has yet to be recognized by the World Sailing Speed Record Council.
The solo 24-hour record is one of the most coveted records in sailing. Because the burden on the skipper is enormous. The high speeds do not forgive mistakes, especially at night high waves are difficult to assess. Sleep is therefore only possible in short sequences of a few minutes, and the ship must be constantly monitored. It is not enough to rely on the automatic steering system.

Francis Joyon
The old record has existed since 1994, when Laurent Bourgnon ("Primagaz") achieved 540 nm one-handed in 24 hours. The record measured with GPS must now be confirmed by the WSSRC (World Sailing Speed Record Council).
Joyon started off New York on June 30, 2005 to set a new one-handed transatlantic record to the Cap Lizard (Great Britain), which his compatriot Laurent Bourgnon has also held since 1994 with 7 days, 2 hours, 34 meters and 42 seconds.
