Roland Gäbler´s new Scot: Marcus Raupach from Leipzig

The premiere of the Volvo Champions Race of Sailors on Lake Cospuden in Leipzig started with a surprise. The three-time tornado world champion Roland Gäbler (Tinglev) sails in Leipzig with the only 13-year-old young talent Marcus Raupach from the Leipzig South-West sailing club.

Because Gäbler's bowman Gunnar Struckmann (Kiel) injured his hip shortly before leaving for Leipzig, the helmsman came alone to the Cospudener See and suggested that a sailor from the region be hired as a substitute “man”.

The young Marcus Raupach usually sails as a helmsman in the youth class 420 and could "hardly sleep" with excitement the night before the first race. After the first three races sailed, Gäbler and Raupach rank eight overall. Roland Gäbler, Olympic third party from Sydney 2000 and also national coach of the Tornado sailors, didn’t skimp on praise and motivation: “Marcus does a good job, I think we did very respectably, after all, we were together on the same boat for the first time today sat and sailed against the absolute best in the world."

"Jojo" Polgar, who just finished a sensational World Cup in France in fourth place, but has so far not been able to cope with his new boat Taylor Booth on Lake Cospuden and is currently only in 9th place, caused a little disappointment for the fans.

The Volvo Champions Race, endowed with a total of 76,000 euros in the Olympic boat classes 49er and Tornado, will stop at Lake Cospuden for the first time. The first day of the competition was the filigree 49ers, which “hissed” over the lake in light winds.

After four races, the young Austrians Nico Delle-Karth and Nikolaus Resch are somewhat surprisingly ahead of the silver medalist from Athens Rodion Lukaus of Ukraine. The best German 49ers Marcus Baur and Max Groy follow in third place. The first day was disappointing for the young Germans Jan-Peter and Hannes Peckolt, who couldn't cope with the conditions and are in 8th place.

Leipzig's recreational waters is the second stop after Starnberg, the finals will take place from September 8th to 11th in Travemünde.
