Jan von der Bank became Contender World Champion, Hunger / Jess won the German 505 title, and the sailors crowned their champions.
The 116th Travemuende Week ended with a positive result after ten days with 807 boats and 3000 sailors from 18 nations in 33 classes. Almost a million spectators visited the seaside resort during the sailing week. Dr. Claus-Dieter Stolze, Managing Director of Travemünder-Woche-GmbH, was very satisfied with the outcome. The 58-year-old told the YACHT that there were only numerous protests against the organizers among the thick ships, because many things were simply not clearly formulated.
The main focus was certainly on the performance of the German sailors at the Contender World Championship. When at the end of this year's Kiel Week winner Jan von der Bank stood on the top podium in front of the five-time world champion from Italy AdriBonezzi, the world was fine, at least from a German point of view.
The two 505 sailors who are used to victory, Dr. Wolfgang Hunger and Holger Jess, who were second behind the Hamburgers Lehmann / Schöler during the Kiel Week, lived up to their role as favorites, turned the tables in front of Travemünde and won the DM title.
The races in the Bay of Lübeck were accompanied by a gigantic supporting program. In purely sporting terms, mayors tried their hand at America’s Cups against district administrators during the Rotspon regatta. At least here the mayors had the better end for themselves.
On the last day there was a spectacular accident during the classic car regattum of the Niederegger Cup near the Travemünder fairway. The 22-meter-long "De Hoop" capsized in a gust of 7 to 8 wind forces, ran full and sank. Only the masts protruded a little out of the water. The six-man crew got away with the horror and wet clothes.
