"Örn" in the travel lift, the broken mast next to it

On Friday morning, the Swedish team Victory Challenge made an expensive mistake. The mast broke while being lifted with the travel lift and came from above. However, a replacement mast could be provided and the team trained again in front of Trapani on Sunday.

In the AC port of Trapani, the twelve teams share four travel lifts, which means that the crane has to have a tight schedule. In the hustle and bustle when leaving for training on Friday morning, the team forgot to solve the major case that was tied to a container to secure the mast during the night. The boat headed for the water, the mast staying where it was.

According to the team, the noise level in the port was so high that warning calls from the travel lift driver were not heard. The mast is particularly susceptible to being lifted, and although it is held in place by the shrouds at the side, the center of the mast is not stabilized towards the front because the backstays are not attached. Due to the tension on the halyard, which was still fixed to the container, the mast broke into three parts and came from above, falling across some containers belonging to the neighboring LunRossa team. Nobody got hurt.

The Swedish team was able to rig the replacement mast by Sunday and train again in front of Trapani.
