Torsten Conradi, Judel / Vrolijk & Co

Rolf Vrolijk and Fietje Judel are the founders of the construction office in Bremerhaven, which has been renowned worldwide for many years. More than 25 years ago, they brought a third man on board: Torsten Conradi. It has long since made a name for itself in the industry - even if it only appears encrypted at the end of the company name.

Although Fietje Judel has since withdrawn, Vrolijk and Conradi are sticking to the original company name. Not least because of this, one could underestimate Conradi, consider him a cautious person with modest demands. One who doesn't like to be in the limelight.

But that's not true. YACHT author TatjanPokorny accompanied Torsten Conradi at work for a day, observed him and talked to his colleagues, friends and family. She wanted to find out what makes the native Heligoland tick, what drives him and how he motivates or influences others.

Because Conradi is not only the head of a design office. He has also been President of the German Boat and Shipbuilders Association for a year. In this function he tries to enforce the interests of over 400 member companies against the federal, state and various bureaucrats. He vehemently advocates a deregulation of the regulations in yacht building.

What makes Torsten Conradi special, why he is anything but a quiet step, but he still enjoys tremendous sympathy in the industry, and what boats would look like if he were allowed to draw them free from shipyard specifications, that and more can now be read in the new YACHT (Issue 3/2009, available from Wednesday at the kiosk).
