The transition season is just around the corner, and many crews still want to use the last warm days for a trip. But in autumn the air layers in Europe become more unstable: while the atmosphere is already cooling down considerably, the water is still warm and the potential for storms increases.
The potential for gusts is also becoming stronger: the cold air from higher layers is increasingly finding its way down suddenly and is becoming more difficult to predict. While many sailors in Northern Europe expect this kind of weather, some crews in the Mediterranean are dazzled by the gentle conditions there in places, such as in the Aegean Sea. But even there, the Lodos, as the storm wind from the south is called, can suddenly surprise the crews and then turn otherwise safe anchor bays into Legerwall traps. Almost every year yachts are damaged in this way in the eastern Mediterranean.
