"Lending Club 2" before the start of the Transpac record

Actually, Boris Herrmann, who acts as navigator on board the 105-foot Tris, shouldn't have started until Saturday. Then the fastest multihulls start the Transpac race from Los Angeles to Hawaii.

But the extremely dull weather conditions expected for this point in time would have made a new best time for the 2200 nautical miles long stretch questionable or even impossible. But that was exactly the goal of the two co-skippers Renaud Laplanche and Ryan Breymaier.

After evaluating all the available weather information, Herrmann suggested a start outside of the actual race at the beginning of the week. On Tuesday, the skippers approved the plan. And it looks like it can open.

"Lending Club 2" has been underway since yesterday shortly before 2 p.m. local time on the US west coast, 10:44:32 p.m. UTC. The tri, who was the Jules Verne record holder under Franck Cammas, used the sea breeze to break free from the mainland and enter the Passat Zone. Since then it has been logging between 20 and 30 knots. Enough to pulverize the previous record.

Olivier de Kersauson set it up ten years ago with "Geronimo". He was underway for four days, 19 hours and 31 minutes, an average of 19.17 knots. Boris Herrmann ideally reckons with a time of around three and a half days.

If the ride succeeds, it would be the third record in a row that the team has set. Previously, "Lending Club 2" had already set new records on the Cowes – Dinard and Newport – Bermuda routes.

The team sponsor is also co-skipper. The 45-year-old Frenchman Renaud Laplanche, a well-known internet entrepreneur in the US, was already successful as a sailor in the Olympic field at a young age - among other things as a French laser champion.
