May offshore regatt 2015 off Kiel

Nice start to the German offshore season 2015: On the weekend off Kiel, more than 70 crews competed for podium places in the May offshore regatta. The classic Maior started with a persistent lull that thwarted all of its scheduled starts for Friday, but then picked up speed. With freshening winds, seven out of ten planned races could be held over three days. On Sunday, 20 knots of wind and bright sunshine gave the teams a dream sailing day. It was a perfect start to the sailing summer for sailors and organizers.

Stefan Kunstmann was particularly pleased with the many successful starts. The internationally experienced race director attributed the quality of the participants to their good preparation and praised: "The starts were all high-class. Here you could clearly see what a targeted training weekend can achieve." With this, Kunstmann referred to the "Go for Speed!" Training camp that had been well attended the weekend before.

A novelty this year was the division of the regatta course into two parts. The OneDesign classes J 70, J 80 and Melges 24 sailed directly in front of the harbor mole in Kiel-Schilksee and thus also offered beautiful pictures to the spectators on land. The ORC classes, on the other hand, demonstrated their seaworthiness further out on the Baltic Sea. The organizers delighted the participants with more berths, shorter distances and the Sailors Lounge as a new location on land. The service à lcarte was well received.

The classes J 70 and J 80, which are still on the upswing, enjoyed high priority. The popular Bundesliga boats of the type J 70 will host their German Open during the Kiel Week and have already celebrated the successful dress rehearsal at the Maior. The Maior victory was secured in an exciting duel with Ingo Lochmann's team, the team led by Sailing Team Germany founder Oliver Schwall. The tornado world champion from 1993 had no problems switching from the Melges 24 to the J 70 and enjoyed the top-class exchange of blows in the new class, both visibly and audibly: "That was a great regatt with a really close finale according to the motto he or us. That was really good sport, which was a lot of fun. The class is developing great."

The popular J 70 Bundesliga class served exciting races

The bigger sisters of the type J 80 are sailing their world championships on the fjord after the Kiel Week and had the opportunity to determine their position during the Maior. Here Sven Vaagt had confidently led the field until the fourth race before Sören Hadeler took the lead. Only his early start in the last race cleared the way for a double victory for the sailing comrade Das Wappen von Bremen: Sven Vaagt won the series from Björn Beilken's team. The Melges 24 class, on the other hand, was dominated by two Danish ships.

There was also a lot of positive tension during the races in the ORC classes. In ORC 3/4, "Patent 3" with helmsman Tebbe Henning prevailed with a total of five daily victories, ahead of the "Halbtrocken" and the "Passion X". In ORC 2 the Danish X-37 "Hansen" with Michael Mollmann won ahead of "Xen". In the premier class ORC 1, the decision was only made in the last run. Niels Gauer's "X-Day" won ahead of "Immac One4All" and "El Pocko".
