It was clear that records would tumble on the speed trip in Saintes Maries de lMer. The former record holder, Finian Maynard (British Virgin Islands), also raced across the canal at Mistral - but not fast enough. However, the speed kings agree: the 50-knot mark is within reach.

At 12:29 p.m. it was over for Finian Maynard's all-time record of 48.70 knots that he had held. It was precisely at that time that the Frenchman Albeau set his new speed record as part of the Masters of Speed event at the "French Trench". Albeau, Fanian and Diethelm are considered the "big ones" among speed surfers. No one is surprised that they took the opportunity that the day offered with dream conditions: almost 50 knots of wind at ("almost", as Albeau emphasizes) the right angle to the speed channel specially dug for such occasions. Diethelm got the record for series boards. The measuring device, monitored by the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSCR), showed 46.51 knots during a run by Patrik Diethelm. His equipment: an FX-Missile-XS-Board and a sail from North. "The 50-knot mark is definitely within reach now," commented organizer Pascal Makaus France.
