Hard sailing stadium. Match race duels you can touch

It's a miracle. Lake Constance is still and rigid, but a steady wind blows reliably in the inland basin of Hard near Bregenz. These are the basic conditions that allow a large international match race. Hard has a natural sailing stadium.

This year the Open Match Race Cup (grade 2) took place in this area for the third time, the only high-quality match race in Austria. Twelve teams, ten of them from the top 51 in the world rankings, followed the good reputation of the event that organizer Christian Rinder set up with the help of the Hard Yacht Club.

Ian Ainslie from South Africa was number one. The Shosholoza strategist is number 12 in the world. The Swiss Eric Monnin (13th) followed in the seed list in second place, one place ahead of Mads Ebler (14) from Denmark.

But not the three favorites made up the victory among themselves. The youth got along best with the sporty Streamline boats. Ainslie (41) made it into the semi-finals with a victory over defending champion Monnin in the last race of the big everyone-against-everyone series. There he was clearly defeated by the young New Zealander Adam Minoprio (22) with 0: 2.

The second semi-final pairing was won 2-0 by the surprisingly strong Slovenian Jure Orel (37) against the Pole Marek Stancyk (26). Orel had already won the preliminary round. Stanczyk, on the other hand, only made progress after a serious collision, for which the jury had penalized him by deducting half a point. He lost in the small final against Ainslie with 0-2.

The final was dominated by the young Kiwi, whose brother Simon Minoprio is five places ahead of him in the world rankings in 21st place. The New Zealanders improved the handling of the unknown boats from race to race impressively.

The decision was made in the second final match when the Slovenian ran out of nerves. In the pre-start he halved into a position in which he lost the right of way. The punishment due sealed his defeat.

The participants from ten nations were enthusiastic about the event with almost perfect wind conditions. The final took place in front of numerous spectators who enjoyed the summer weather and the duels with live commentary.

The Yacht Club Hard has set another brand as a match race organizer. The profile is to be sharpened in the next few years. Because in 2010 the Austrians will host the European Match Race Championship.

Bottom line:

final Minoprio (NZL) - Orel (SLZ): 3-
