Kamrath at the finish: Victory in the laser match race

Last year Kamrath narrowly failed in the final, this time it worked. In the showdown of the two-day match race of the ten best laser sailors in Germany, he won ahead of Tobias Schadewaldt. Both delivered an exciting race with remarkable tactical finesse in weak winds.

The match race mode is actually unfamiliar terrain for laser sailors, but all opponents clearly enjoyed poaching in the discipline. Kamrath and Schadewaldt coped best with the changeover and qualified yesterday in the heats for the finals. There it went down to business according to all the rules of the art. After dipping into the start box, both watched each other, reversing and turning every second, gave each other exciting changes of position for the lead. With the start, a turning duel with the first barrel began in all runs - including an estimated 20 to 30 turns per cross. Especially on the upwind gear, Kamrath showed a strong performance thanks to perfect roll turns.

Pre-start tactics: Both lasers circle backwards with the sail held back

In the weak wind of the Alster, known for its holes, Kamrath just got the upper hand in the first race. The second run went to Schadewaldt, who had recently returned to the boat for the Laser World Championships and finished 11th there, but otherwise switched to the 49er. In the third race, the Berlin sailor prevailed again. The victory earned him the coveted prize money of 1,500 euros from the main sponsor, the Hamburg meat wholesale market.
