The trend towards long-distance regattas continues. Now a new one is being added that has the potential for a classic. In autumn of this year, at the end of the Flensburg Autumn Week, it should go south from Flensburg around Bornholm to St. Petersburg. This race is almost exactly 800 nautical miles long and there is no other limit than the speed of the yacht.

It must be at least 30 feet long and have a GPH value less than 550. The ORCi and ORC Club are used for evaluation, so ambitious amateur crews should also be able to take part with plenty of opportunities. At the same time, there should be a separate start for the Swan-60 one-size-fits-all class, with which the race was launched last October. In addition, it should be an official record track. "We hope that the participants will have a respectable time for this race, which the World Sailing Speed Record Council will officially list," says Henning Rocholl, managing director of the North German Regatta Association, which is co-organizing the event. The second organizer is the Saint Petersburg Yacht Club.

This new regatt will be particularly interesting because of the timing and further planning. So there should be enough time for all participants in the Flensburg Fördewoche to prepare the boat and the crew for this long haul. So if you wanted to end your regatta season in Flensburg anyway, you have the chance of an extension.

The organizers want to make participation as easy as possible, for example by helping with the entry formalities to Russia. In addition, the NRV is planning a cross-club crew exchange for owners who want to bring their yacht back to their home port.

But that doesn't have to be the case. Because the Nord Stream Race 2014 is to be sailed in the opposite direction in May, from St. Petersburg back to Glücksburg in the Flensburg Fjord. The participants could have their yachts wintered in St. Petersburg and still be back in time for the on-board lake week.

Rocholl hopes to inspire around 20 yachts to participate. "It should be the Fastnet Race of the Baltic Sea," he says. With the "HaspHamburg" of the Hamburgische Verein Seefahrt there is already an initial report.
