Wet on the Finn: Matthias Miller from STG tried hard, but not spoiled by success as 21st

Windy, cool, British. It was tough at the Olympic test event. Sometimes so much that it was impossible to sail at all. When it blew a little easier, it was hard as hell, with unpredictable spins, especially just under land where the medal races are being held. The bad news for the Sailing Team Germany: The gap to the absolute top has increased in most classes. The good one: there is still a year until the start of the Olympic regatta.

Winner type: Australian Tom Slingsby beat Dutch Rutger van Schaardenburg and British defending champion Paul Goodison at the laser

The fields were small because only the most promising sailors from each nation were there. And there was great sport, especially from the British Ben Ainslie, who sailed the Finns to the ground, and from the Brazilians Robert Scheidt / Bruno Prada, who leveled the competition in the star boat. Most of the medals, six in number, were won by the hosts, as expected, followed by the strong Dutch with five, then Poland and Australia with three each.

Inviolable: Ben Ainslie (center) won the Finns by 31 points

After the performance in the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatt, the Germans' performance was sobering: A seventh place each for Simon Grotelüschen in the hard-fought laser (with a fourth place in the medal race) and Tobias Schadewaldt / Hannes Baumann in the 49er (despite being disqualified in the medal race) and the ninth place of windsurfer Toni Wilhelm in the RS: X give cause for hope for 2012. Robert Stanjek / Frithjof Kleen narrowly missed the medal race as 11th in the star, all others finished the competition between places 14 (MoanDelle, RS: X women) to 21 (Matthias Miller, Finn). Silke Hahlbrock was eliminated from the women's match race before the quarter-finals.

Bottled: FranziskGoltz, who was still in the top ten in the Laser Radial at the World Cup in Weymouth, had to be content with a disappointing 19th place

One has to hope that the saying applies to the STG that a failed dress rehearsal precedes a successful premiere. The final selection of Olympic sailors will be made after the World Championships in Australia in December.

A positive aspect during these long two weeks, in which there was next to nothing to hear or read from the official side about the German sailors, was the timely and comprehensive reporting by the Finn class, which independently summarized the daily events and also appealing pictures delivered.
